Intramural Open

2019 CrossFit Helix Intramural Open

The CrossFit Open is a worldwide CrossFit competition. We do it every year. It’s fun. Last year, over 420,000 people entered the competition from all over the world. This included athletes of all ability levels.

At Helix, we do the CrossFit Open a little bit differently. This is the Helix Intramural Open.

Last year, many Helix’ers PR’d their lifts and got movements like chest-to-bar or toes-to-bar for the first time during the Open. This year, we expect even more fun and PRs. There are Masters and Scaled Divisions so everyone can participate. It will be AWESOME!!

Our goals at CrossFit Helix: to educate and inspire, and make people better every day. Competition helps with the ‘inspire’ part: the pressure to perform pushes you to train harder; the social boost of dozens of your best friends cheering for you will help you reach a higher plane. Heck, watching your teammates GO is inspiring.

Can we bring that worldwide thrill home? Can we deliver all the fun of competition without causing any anxiety attacks? We think so.

In 2019, we’ll still have our serious competitors. But through the Open, we’re going to have four intramural teams competing. And you’re going to be on one of them!

The Captains’ job is to get you to register for the Open, and experience the benefit of annual group competition.

These captains are basically recruiting you to have fun because simple participation matters more than actual scores. We want you to sign up this year! Are you really going to say no to one of them? I don’t think so.

Registration is only $20 and will be done a little differently this year at Helix. We’ve purchased software from a third-party to handle scoring, divisions and points within our gym.

However, you can still choose to register for the Open at, and choose CrossFit Helix as your Affiliate. We will validate your submitted scores.

Everyone will be ‘drafted’ onto an Intramural team. The team captains will have the ‘Draft’ soon and as the Open comes closer, we’ll announce whose team you’re on!

Team Captain: Ashley Meyer
Team Name: Buff & Stuff

Team Captain: Ian Russ
Team Name: “We’re Building a WOD, It’s Gonna Be Great”

Team Captain: Mikala Lindsley
Team Name: Cirque de Sore Legs

Team Captain: Tina Beauvais
Team Name: The WOD Squad

+1 Point – Attendance: every member of a team that completes an Open workout at CFHX each week earns one point. Maximum one point per athlete per workout. The Open WOD will be the Workout of the Day each Friday. This goes for Rx AND Scaled competitors!

+1 Point – If the workout is completed during the “Friday Night Lights” series. More on this below.

+1 Point – Uploading your score to the games site each week (must formally register for these points).

If you find your team behind at any point during the Open, or just want to boost your teams chance of winning, here are some NEW Bonus Point Opportunities this year:

+1 Point – For writing us a Google review here:

+1 Point – For submitting a video testimonial about how the gym has changed your life.

+2 Points each – For attending the Gymnastics or Weightlifting clinic

Individual Points – Each week, you’ll earn points for your team based on how you did compared to other Helix’ers registered within your division. For example, if we have 25 female athletes register for the Women’s Rx division, then the top female for each workout would earn their team 100. The 2nd place female would earn their team 98 points, and so on. (In years past, literally a few reps or a few seconds would separate people, so this is where “every rep counts” really comes to life!)

In 2019, athletes competing in the Open will have only four days to complete each workout. We will be doing the Open Workouts on Fridays. The workout will be different each week and will be announced on Thursday night each week.

The winning team will get a banner added to our Intramural Open Hall of Fame.

Our focus is on FUN. We want participation because it will make you fitter, and it will get you high-fives and you’ll be happy and love life more and glow and stuff.

Starting on Friday 10/11, we will be having a “Friday Night Lights” series to complete the Open WODs. All afternoon classes will be Friday Night Lights during these five weeks and we will have FNL heat sign ups starting at 3:30pm.

Make-ups/re-dos: We will offer a time on Sundays at 1pm for any make-ups or workout re-dos. Friday Night Lights (and all morning classes on Friday) and Sundays at 1pm will be the only time you can do each week’s workout and submit for an official score.

CrossFit Kids Division

  • Each Friday night at 5:00pm, we’ll run a heat just for our kiddos! Any registered Helix athlete may bring their kid to participate in the kid version of the weekly workout so they can be just like Mom or Dad! At the end of the Open, each kid will receive medals and certificates for participating!

Custom Open Apparel

  • We will have the opportunity for you to order custom CrossFit Helix branded Open-themed shirts on our Online Store!

Bonus 6th WOD

  • You and your team will compete against the other teams in a “Nerf Gun Biathlon” on Saturday, November 2nd at 9:30am. We’ll announce more details later, but for now, just know that rowers, Nerf Guns and burpees will be involved. 🙂 This will be EPIC!

New Divisions, Podiums & Awards

  • We will have divisions within our gym this year and you can only pick one division to compete in when you register:
    • Women & Men
    • Master’s Women & Men (age 55+)
    • Women & Men w/ Less Than 2 Years of CrossFit Experience
  • Within these divisions, we will give out weekly podium awards as well as overall podium awards at the end of the Open.
  • Each week you can email us to nominate someone who inspired you for the “Impact Award.” We’ll print out nominations each week and post them on the gym for everyone to see!

Pre-Open Skill Clinics

Register for one of or both of our upcoming Gymnastics or Weightlifting Clinics. Movements under these two categories always give athletes the most trouble during the Open, so we’re giving you the opportunity to go into the Open a little bit more confident!

Each clinic will be 1 hour and 30 minutes and will cost $25 each.

During the Gymnastics clinic, we’ll focus on handstand push-ups, pull-ups and bar/ring muscle-ups. Space is limited to 12 athletes. Register here!

During the Weightlifting clinic, we’ll focus on the two olympic lifts: Snatches and Cleans. Space is limited to 12 athletes. Register here!

The Team Captains will host the Draft on Sunday, October 6th (only team captains will be present, no athletes) and we’ll announce whose team you are on later that day!
