Intramural Open

2018 CrossFit Helix Intramural Open

The CrossFit Open is a worldwide CrossFit competition. We do it every year. It’s fun. Last year, close to 300,000 people entered the competition from all over the world. This included athletes of all ability levels.

At Helix, we do the CrossFit Open a little bit differently. This is the Helix Intramural Open.

Last year, many Helix’ers PR’d their lifts and got movements like chest-to-bar or toes-to-bar for the first time during the Open. This year, we expect even more fun and PRs. There are Masters and Scaled Divisions so everyone can participate. This year, HQ has added a 35-39 age category to Masters. It will be AWESOME!!

Our goals at CrossFit Helix: to educate and inspire, and make people better every day. Competition helps with the ‘inspire’ part: the pressure to perform pushes you to train harder; the social boost of dozens of your best friends cheering for you will help you reach a higher plane. Heck, watching your teammates GO is inspiring.

Can we bring that worldwide thrill home? Can we deliver all the fun of competition without causing any anxiety attacks? We think so.

In 2018, we’ll still have our serious competitors. But through the Open, we’re going to have four intramural teams competing. And you’re going to be on one of them!

The Captains of the two teams have been chosen!

Team Captain: Mark
Team “Jacked in the Box”

Team Captain: Mario
Team “WODIMALS”

Team Captain: Linda
Team “Blood, Sweat & Beers”

Team Captain: Annette
Team “Guns, Pistols & Wine”

The Captains’ job is to get you to register for the Open, and experience the benefit of annual group competition.

These captains are basically recruiting you to have fun because simple participation matters more than actual scores. We want you to sign up this year! Are you really going to say no to one of them? I don’t think so.

REGISTRATION

Registration for the Open can be done at games.crossfit.com, and choose CrossFit Helix as your Affiliate and Team.

The DRAFT

Everyone will be ‘drafted’ onto an Intramural team. The team captains will have the ‘Draft’ soon and as the Open comes closer, we’ll announce whose team you’re on!

POINTS

+1 Point – Attendance: every member of a team that completes an Open workout at CFHX each week earns one point. Maximum one point per athlete per workout. The Open WOD will be the Workout of the Day each Friday. This goes for Rx AND Scaled competitors!

+1 Point – If the workout is completed during the “Friday Night Lights” series. More on this below.

+1 Point – Uploading your score to the games site each week (must formally register for these points).

+1 Point – For becoming a registered judge (one time only point)

Individual Points – Each week, you’ll earn points for your team based on how you did compared to other Helix’ers registered. For example, if we have 50 athletes register and half of them are male and half are female, then the top male/female for each workout would earn their team 25 points. The 2nd place male/female would each earn their team 24 points, and so on. (In years past, literally a few reps or a few seconds would separate people, so this is where “every rep counts” really comes to life!)

WORKOUTS

In 2018, athletes competing in the Open will have only four days to complete each workout. We will be doing the Open Workouts on Fridays. You are welcome to make up the workout on Saturday from 8:30-10:30 during classes on the Black side or on Sundays during Open Gym from 9:30-11:30am if you miss Friday (remember though you get your team 1 point each week for doing the workout during Friday Night Lights). You’ll also need to coordinate with a someone to judge your workout, and it cannot be the scheduled Coach.

PRIZES

The winning team will get a banner added to our Intramural Open Hall of Fame.

Our focus is on FUN. We want participation because it will make you fitter, and it will get you high-fives and you’ll be happy and love life more and glow and stuff.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Starting on Friday 2/23, we will be having a “Friday Night Lights” series to complete the Open WODs. All afternoon classes will be Friday Night Lights during these five weeks and we will have FNL heat sign ups starting at 3:30pm.

REGISTERED JUDGES

To get the point for your team, you’ll need to print your judge’s certificate and we’ll hang it up in the gym.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOW?
